Fructosamine is the result of a bond between glucose and albumin or other proteins. Similar to hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), fructosamine can be used to monitor long term control of glucose in diabetics.
It has a shorter half-life than hemoglobin A1C and is thought to be more sensitive as a marker of short term fluctuations in glucose levels. Fructosamine reflects diabetic control over a shorter time period of 2-3 weeks compared to 4-8 weeks for HbA1C.
Fructosamine is not subject to variations in the levels of hemoglobin, which may alter the hemoglobin A1C test.
Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed.
