The Lp(a) test is used to measure the blood level of small dense lipoproteins, which are a direct link to the formation of arterial plaques (atherosclerosis), and is a strong indicator for coronary heart disease.
Elevated blood levels of lipoprotein are associated with increased risk of cardiac death in individuals with a history of acute heart attacks and coronary bypass procedures. Lp(a) also increases your risk for coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke.
An 8 to 12 hour fast is required for this blood test. However, drink plenty of water and take your medications as prescribed. Intake of alcohol, aspirin, niacin, and estrogen supplements have the potential of causing a misrepresentation of true Lp(a) concentrations.
