Methylmalonic acid (MMA) found in the urine is often associated with the early stages of B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the production of red blood cells from the bone marrow. When B12 levels are low, red blood cell production decreases, resulting in anemia.
MMA may be ordered along with a homocysteine test, when a vitamin B12 deficiency is suspected. An MMA test may also be ordered as a follow-up to an elevated homocysteine level.
Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed.
