This panel contains the following tests:

  • The number of LDL particles (LDL-P)
  • A standard cholesterol test (LDL-C, HDL-C, Triglycerides and Total Cholesterol).
  • The NMR LipoProfile® also provides a calculation of one’s risk of type 2 diabetes by assessing abnormalities in lipoprotein markers that are closely associated with insulin resistance (a precursor to type 2 diabetes).

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) utilizes imaging that produces a representation of the lipoproteins found in a simple blood sample. An easy way to understand the concept of NMR technology is to compare it to the ringing of bells. When a group of bells are struck, the frequency of the sound separates the ring of one bell from another while the loudness of the sound reflects the number of bells struck. By recording the "ringing" of all of the lipoproteins in a blood sample, it is possible to identify the number and type of lipoprotein particles present.

LDL particles are the containers that transport cholesterol through your blood stream. The higher the number of LDL particles (LDL-P), the more likely they are to break through the wall of the arteries and form the plaque that is called atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

An 8 to 12 hour fast is required for this blood test. However, drink plenty of water and take your medications as prescribed.
