Updated blood pressure goals predicted to prevent over 3 million cardiovascular events during a decade

A study published on November 19, 2018 in Circulation predicts that maintaining the blood pressure goals established in 2017 by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association could result in 3.3 million fewer cardiovascular deaths over a 10-year period. The 2017 guidelines recommend that blood pressure be maintained at no higher than 130/80 mm Hg. The estimate of lives saved surpassed those associated with the seventh and eight Joint National Committee guidelines, which recommended an upper limit of no greater than 140/90 mm Hg among individuals younger than 60 years.
