Inositol is a sugar-like substance and is part of the water-soluble B vitamin complex. It is found in the body in the liver, kidney, skeletal and heart muscle, as well as present in many plants. Inositol hexaphosphate (IP-6), also known as phytate, is a naturally occurring polyphosphorylated carbohydrate, present in almost all mammalian cells, although in much smaller amounts, where it is important in regulating vital cellular functions such as signal transduction, cell proliferation, and differentiation. For a long time IP-6 has been recognized as a natural antioxidant.  Inositol hexaphosphate, along with inositol, are metabolized to inositol triphosphates, which are believed to be involved in cell signaling and regulating cell growth, and this may underlie its possible effects.
