Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid that is used to support a healthy intestinal tract. It is naturally produced in the gut when fiber is metabolized by specific bacteria. Butyric acid helps support a healthy inflammatory response by inhibiting the activation of proinflammatory nuclear factor-kappa B, which is elevated in people with Crohn’s disease.1 A clinical trial found improved gastrointestinal health in people with Crohn’s disease who were given butyrate.2
