Understanding Digestive Health

A healthy digestive system is essential to your body’s absorption and optimal utilization of food and all its nutrients. Maintaining a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria, plus a healthy level of digestive enzymes and an effective pH balance, can optimize not just your digestion, but whole-body health. The phases of digestion include the digestion of food, absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste products.

What can you do to support healthy digestion?

Eating balanced, healthy meals and not overeating is key. If you have an intolerance for certain foods, avoid them. Avoid eating within two hours of bedtime. If you feel like you’re taking the right steps but still have digestive discomfort, see your doctor.

2.
What foods support digestion?

Eating plenty of unprocessed, healthy, plant-based foods to ensure you get adequate fiber is important for digestion. Fermented foods such as yogurt, kimchi and sauerkraut provide probiotics, which are good for the gut. Ginger has been traditionally used as a digestion aid. Peppermint tea might also be helpful.

3.
How can you support digestive comfort?

First, the amount you eat at any one time may be more important than the types of food you eat. Try to eat small portions and eat slowly, chewing your food thoroughly. Avoid excessively fatty foods. Acidic foods, such as tomato sauce and citrus fruits, and spicy foods may cause occasional digestive discomfort. Avoiding processed, pre-packaged foods is a good idea for digestive health and overall health. Alcohol should be avoided or limited to small amounts.
